Definition: MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging. MRIs use powerful magnets and 3D computer images to capture detailed views of the spine, from many angles. Doctors tend to order MRIs when they already know what they are looking for and need more detail, and prior to surgery. MRIs can rule out tumors and infections and are particularly useful for viewing the nerve roots and the condition of the spinal nerves.
